CYNA 12 Days of Christmas, Day 12 – Freestyle

The final prompt of the challenge!  I’m two days late posting, but I’m glad to get it done at all.  To be honest, I wasn’t sure what I could possibly do for this prompt.  I didn’t want to freehand anything, but I also didn’t want to do dots or stripes or anything I would typically do on my nails.

Then I spotted ellagee’s bright blue Lickety Split latex barrier sitting amongst my polishes and thought…watermarble?

Yeah, bad idea.  Watermarbles never turn out the way they should for me.  I struggled with this for way too long for a pretty average end result.  I even tried slightly different patterns, but nothing worked well enough for my tastes.  On the plus side, the polishes I used–Peita’s Polish Triwizard, SquareHue Bird Fling, and Nvr Enuff HHC Festivus–all worked nicely and look good together.  It was just my own skills that were lacking. 😛

But for all that I don’t quite like how each individual nail looks, the overall mani looks pretty okay.  The ring and pinky nails look good at the very least.  So not a bad way to end the challenge!

CYNA 12 Days of Christmas, Day 11 – Nightmare Before Christmas images

There are so many things that can be done with a Nightmare Before Christmas prompt!  I was so sad that I just didn’t have the time to do anything to intricate, but I could at the very least do nail art featuring the cutest character in the movie.  That character is Zero, of course.

So I threw down a couple coats of Firecracker Lacquer Penguin Parade and painted the cute ghost puppy with the glowing nose.

Personally, I like the flash photo better in this case.  I think the brighter white light sort of makes Zero look more ghostly.

I’m so happy with how he looks!  Strictly speaking, his nose should have been a pumpkin, but I thought the plain old glowing red nose was a nicer (and easier) nod to his role as a doggy Rudolph in the movie 😛

CYNA 12 Days of Christmas, Day 10 – Christmas cookies

You know, I’m sure a lot of families bake and decorate Christmas cookies together, but it’s not something my family ever really did.  When I saw the Christmas cookie prompt for Day 10 of the challenge, all I could really think of are those Pillsbury sugar cookies with the Christmas trees in the center.  So that’s what I went with.  Then I remembered that gingerbread men are sort of a standard for Christmas and added one of them as well.

This was actually much more difficult than I was anticipating, especially the gingerbread man.  I don’t have my full range of polishes right now, and nothing here at my parents’ house was a good color for gingerbread.  I think I spent more time mixing polishes for that brown color than I did on painting all of the cookies.  But things turned out pretty well and I’m happy with the final result.

Oh, and I got to use my first ever NailNation 3000 polish!  The background color is #captaincamo, which is described as a grassy green with gold flecks.  It was darker than that on my nails, but was still beautiful.  It dries to a suede finish, and is good to go in two coats.  Honestly, it was probably good in one coat, but I did two anyway.

Isn’t that the perfect background for my Christmas cookie nail art?  I think it was a great choice, and was a fantastic introduction to NailNation 3000 as a brand.  I can’t wait to try out the others that I bought!

CYNA 12 Days of Christmas, Day 9 – Penguins

Well, I’m disappointed that I failed to complete this challenge on time.  I did complete all the prompts, but just didn’t have time in the days since I’ve been home to actually post them.  It’s just been a whirlwind of shopping and spending time with my family.  Now that Christmas has passed, I am still going to make the posts just to show what I came up with.  So on to Day 9’s Penguin prompt!

When I Googled ideas for Christmas penguins, I found a few images of penguins standing on each other to make a tree, so that’s what I wanted to try.  I didn’t like the end result so much though, so I also added a Santa penguin on my index too.

And in case you’re wondering, that gorgeous background is Smitten Polish Shoe Polish, one of the recent group customs for the Smitten Polish Lovers Facebook group.  I am sooo glad I managed to get a bottle, because it is a stunning polish with a heck of a lot going on!

Like I said, the penguin tree didn’t turn out quite as well as I hoped it would, but it still looks pretty good.  And I love how my Santa penguin came out.  He’s so cute!  I almost wish I had given him some reindeer penguins to pull his sleigh!  Maybe next year, huh?

CYNA 12 Days of Christmas, Day 8 – Presents/bows

Presents and bows…kind of a standard thing during the holidays, right?  And yet, I really wasn’t feeling this prompt.  But I still tried to have fun with it, of course!

As with my Day 5 mani, I used all LynBDesigns polishes for this nail art.  This time around it was Not Even a Mouse for the background color, and the presents were done with A Right Jolly Old Elf, New Fallen Snow, and Winnie.  These are all new polishes that I was excited to try out.  Two are LEs from the Black Friday sale, one is from the “‘Twas the Night” trio, and one is from the “Sanderson Sisters” Halloween collection.  For anyone reading this that hasn’t yet discovered LynBDesigns, seriously try some polishes out.  Even now that I’ve branched out significantly with my indie purchases, LynB is still probably my favorite brand.

Anyway, enough gushing over my polishes.  What I decided to do was fairly basic.  Just some presents on my nail tips, with my middle finger as a slightly different variation to act as a sort of accent.

And flash:

It was when I was about to go paint a ribbon on my ‘accent’ that I realized I could have some 3D fun with this.  So I went into my mom’s storage/craft/junk closet and grabbed some ribbon.

I had to get my mom to do the twirly effect with the ribbon because I can’t do it right (even if it should be the easiest thing in the world).  It didn’t look quite like I envisioned, but it adds an interesting little element to the nail art.  I found it fun anyway!

CYNA 12 Days of Christmas, Day 7 – Candy cane

And here’s Day 7!  I had high hopes for this one, but unfortunately the day that these were supposed to be posted was the day that I was flying home for Christmas.  So I was sitting at my desk at 3am just not really wanting to paint anything, but wanting to get the mani done before coming home.

So, my solution was to keep it simple.  I slapped on Contrary Polish When in Rome (the first Contrary I’ve ever used!), and painted a single candy cane on an accent nail.

Not my favorite nail art ever, but it gets the job done!  And it shows off When in Rome, which is apparently the first holo that Contrary Polish ever made and was the deciding factor in my choice to get the August A Box Indied. 🙂

And just because I love it so much…here’s a flash picture of When in Rome, showing the gorgeous pink-gold shimmer.

And that’s that!  I ended up loving the background polish more than the nail art, but I guess that just happens sometimes.  And can you blame me?  When in Rome is so pretty!

CYNA 12 Days of Christmas, Day 6 – Ugly sweaters

The 12 Days of Christmas ugly sweater prompt was a difficult one for me last year, and it was a difficult one for me this year too.  There were plenty of nerdy ones that I wanted to try my hand at, but instead I went with a different sort of funny one: T-rex hates Christmas.

In case you can’t tell from my less-than-perfect paint job, this t-rex hates Christmas because his stubby little arms prevent him from properly decorating his tree.  As someone who is just over 5 feet tall, I feel his pain.

There are a few things that I’m a little annoyed about–my top coat filled in his eye and messed up the shape of his mouth a bit, for example–but I like the overall result.  I’m not sure if it turned out better than last year’s ‘walking in a weiner wonderland’ attempt last year though. 😛
