Winter nail art roundup

Happy belated New Years, everyone!

I clearly never finished posting the nail art I did for the 12 Days of Christmas challenge. So despite the fact that we’re nearly a week into the new year, I thought I would post some of those challenge manis and the one I wore for Christmas lunch at my grandparents’ house.

My ‘Christmas lights’ and ‘Glitter’ nails are pretty self-explanatory, I think.  The indie star of the Christmas lights nails is Nvr Enuff Festivus, and the glitter nails feature ALIQUID Lacquer House of Troubles and Smitten Polish The First Lobster.

My ‘Snowmen’ nails might need a little more explanation.  For anyone who has never seen the claymation Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer movie–or who just plain can’t tell who this is–I chose to paint the narrator snowman of the film, Sam.  I wanted to paint his banjo and umbrella too, but I just didn’t have time.  So instead I used Butter London British Racing Green as my background color to pay homage to his signature waistcoat.

For the ‘Trees’ prompt I chose to do a skitlette mani, using SquareHue Olympiad, Nvr Enuff Festivus, Colors by Llarowe Love, Actually, and a few mainstreams.  My stamping on the ring finger wasn’t great but I really liked how this mani turned out, especially my two ornament nails.

Finally, the nails I wore to Christmas lunch.  I did another tape Christmas tree, but chose to go the blue-and-silver direction instead of the red-and-green.  So I used LynBDesigns Noel and Pahlish My Sister’s Shoes to make the tree and some dots (to act as abstract representations of snowflakes, of course 😛 ).  I cannot even begin to describe how sparkly Noel was.  It was absolutely gorgeous, and I was disappointed to see that my camera captured virtually none of it.

And that’s my roundup of Christmas/winter nails!  There were some I loved and some I really didn’t like–my ‘Stars’ nails were such a failure that I deleted all photos of them–and I really wish that I could have had the time and motivation to complete this challenge.  I kind of miss the week-long max of the old CYNA format.  Hopefully we’ll get some shorter challenges in 2017 that I can actually finish! 😛

ALIQUID Lacquer Hipster Doofus + spring nail art

I would love to open this post by saying that spring is in the air, but I don’t think it really is.  It’s still kind of cold here, although there has at least been more sunshine lately.  Or maybe spring really is in the air, but I can’t tell because I’m a Floridian in northern England. 😛

Either way, there was a spring mani contest going on over at the Rainbow Connection Facebook fan page (RC Junkies) a few days ago, and I thought I’d try my hand at it.  My first thought was to do something with ALIQUID Lacquer Hipster Doofus, since I’ve been wanting to use it for a while now.  I thought I’d pair it with a pink creme and a metallic silver (I even had them on my nails already), but then I read the fine print and noticed that I had to use at least one polish that I had bought from Rainbow Connection.  Unfortunately, I only had one ‘spring’ color at the time.  Fortunately, that happened to be Smitten Polish Whiskey in the Jar, which actually matched up with Hipster Doofus pretty well.

So I ended up putting Whiskey in the Jar over OPI My Signature is DC, and to make the pink holo too I put a coat of ILNP Paige over OPI Suzi Nails New Orleans.  Then I added dots over both.  And to add a bit more of a spring touch I stamped a flower from Uber Chic plate 1-02 to my middle finger.

The overall effect is prettier than I expected.  I knew with almost certainty that I was not going to win the contest (at the very least because I only used an RC polish on my pinky), but I don’t really care because I’m really happy with how this looks.  Hipster Doofus is as gorgeous on my nails as I hoped it would be, and look at how clean that flower is!  It is easily the best stamping I have ever done (not that I’ve done a lot).  I ended up wearing this for three days before taking it off!

Saturday Swatchfest-ALIQUID Forever and a Day, Gothic Gala Patina + S.F. Take 2

Hello all!  I was awake at 4 am on a Saturday watching a livestream on Twitch, so thought I’d share a few swatches while I was just sitting here not sleeping.  Granted, I kept getting distracted and so it’s now closer to 7 am, but whatever.  It’s still Saturday. 😛

I’m trying to work my way through my untrieds and so I’ve got swatches of three polishes today.   This post is a picture heavy one, so beware.

The first polish I’m showing off is the only one of my polishes from ALIQUID Lacquer that I had yet to try, the gorgeous Forever and a Day (shown here with three coats).  This polish is a teal-leaning dark grey with various flecks–definitely some purple (possibly iridescent?) ones–and a slight shimmer.  I was expecting a lot from this polish, and it definitely delivered.

The second polish is Gothic Gala Lacquers Patina, which is a light teal—almost aqua–with a nice shimmer.  It dries to a suede finish and is shown here with three coats, plus a top coat.  This one I wasn’t too sure about when looking at it in the bottle, but it’s actually really pretty on my nails.  This color also photographed better with flash, so with the exception of the fourth photo, these are all taken with flash.

And the last polish I’m going to show today is Gothic Gala S.F. Take 2, which is a fantastically dark teal linear holographic.  As with the others, it’s shown here with three coats.  This is a stunning polish, and is my favorite of the four GGLs that I currently have with me.  We’ll have to see how it stands up to the other Gothic Gala polishes that I have waiting for me back in the States. 🙂

Seriously how gorgeous is that?  I was completely enthralled by my nails when I was wearing this polish.

I also did some simple nail art featuring the Gothic Gala polishes, but since the number of photos on this post is already ridiculous I’ll post those photos in a day or so.

OMD3 Day 9-Pattern

I’m feeling much better about today’s OMD3 mani!  I was frustrated as heck while working on it because stamping is one of the most difficult things I have ever tried to do, but I finally managed to get it to (mostly) cooperate.  Seriously, no matter how many times I try out stamping, it just doesn’t seem to turn out right.  But I am pretty happy I got mostly complete images on my nails today though!

More importantly, I chose a fantastic base color.  ALIQUID Lacquer Puppy Love was a LE sold back in October last year, and is a fantastically gorgeous teal polish with pink/purple and gold flecks and a bit of scattered holo.

Puppy Love was the perfect background for stamping, and totally makes up for the stamping mistakes!

Not too bad!  It took waaay too many tries to finally get the images to transfer well enough to use, but it was worth it in the end.  Maybe I need to try this stamping thing more often!

‘April showers’ running gradient nail art

Hello all!  So I forgot to mention back in my Easter post that I’m trying out CraftyNails’ NAIL (Nail Art Ideas Linkup) prompts this month.  The Easter nails were a part of the linkup, and today’s ‘April showers’ inspired nail art is also one of the prompts.

I was originally going to try 3D water drops again since the last time I did them was back in July of last year for the OMD2 challenge’s outdoors prompt (wow, I was sporting some hideously long nails back then), but then had the idea to go a bit more abstract.  The running gradient is another technique that I’ve wanted to try again–the first time I tried it was during the 31 Day Challenge last year for the violet prompt–and so I thought I’d give it a go.

The idea was to make it look reminiscent of sheets of rain.  I used ellagee Trenzalore, LynBDesigns Okay? Okay, and ALIQUID Lacquer I’m Heading Strait to Mackinac for the gradient itself, and OPI Coca-Cola Red and a black Sally Hansen striper for the umbrella.

I’m not sure how successful this was at portraying April showers, but I like how it turned out regardless.  I can’t really say how the running gradient compares to my last attempt since they’re both pretty in my opinion.  I’m also very happy with the decision to use holo blues, because the shine is pretty awesome in person.

As you can see from the graphic at the beginning of the post, the next prompt is ‘pastels’ and will be posted by the 19th.  I’m looking forward to trying out a watermarble for this one, so we’ll see how that goes!

Nail mail!!

I posted my CYNA Day 8 mani very early on the 15th because I thought I’d be travelling on that day, but it turns out that I had the day of my flight wrong, and so I didn’t get back home to the US until last night instead.  I had been awake for somewhere in the neighborhood of 36 hours and really should have just immediately crashed, but when I walked into my bedroom I saw this:

Aside from the big Amazon box in the back, all of those packages were full of nail polish.  And I knew that.  I got very excited.  Instead of going to sleep, I spent an hour unpacking everything and admiring all of my purchases.  So many pretties!  I don’t know how to choose which one to use first.

I’ve got representatives from Pahlish, Colors by Llarowe, ALIQUID Lacquer, NerdLacquer, Gothic Gala Lacquers, Sweet Heart Polish, Paint Box Polish, SquareHue, and LynBDesigns and ended up with 62 bottles of polish (plus a cuticle oil).  And out of all of those polishes I only had one casualty!  It was Why Meddle? by LynBDesigns.  It tried to take down a few others with it, but they only obtained mild injuries.  So really, I have 61 bottles instead of 62.

So…any advice on how to choose which one to use first?

EDIT 12/18/14:

As per Millie’s request in the comments, here’s a complete list of everything in the picture.

And that’s everything!  A few of those were LE that I got with Black Friday orders, and I honestly was surprised by two of them.  I’m not sure if I knew I’d be getting a LE from Sweet Heart and then forgot about it, but seeing five polishes when I opened that package confused me before I saw the name ‘Turkey Day 2014’.  And I knew I’d be getting two extra LynB polishes (Wild and Sweet ; I Heard the Bells), but that third (Black Friday Blues)…well, I somehow crossed the $75 mark without realizing it.  That’s right, I honestly did not know that I spent over $75 because I stopped paying attention after I reached the $50 mark.  How careless is that?!  Still, it all turned out for the best, I guess.  I can add another LE to my collection thanks to that carelessness. 😛

CYNA 12 Days of Christmas, Day 8-Christmas decorations

Well, I am definitely not late with today’s prompt!  I am posting this at 5 in the morning because I’m going to be travelling all day and wouldn’t get a chance to post otherwise.  But I’ll be back in Florida before midnight, and that makes being up this early totally worth it!  Plus, ya know, I’ve got a massive amount of nail mail waiting for me at home, which I’m looking forward to almost as much as seeing my family and pets. 😛

Since today’s prompt is Christmas decorations, I had meant to try and paint one of those completely overdecorated homes, with lights everywhere.  But 3am is not a good time for trying intricate nail art, so I dialed it back a bit.  I used ALIQUID Lacquer Nightingale’s Song as my background color, then used FingerPaints Paper Mache, OPI A-Piers to be Tan, Maybelline Color Show Electric Yellow, Kleancolor Red, and Essie Luxeffects Pure Pearlfection to make my little cabin with Christmas lights.

Things didn’t work out right though, and because my strings of lights are a little too thick, this looks more like a gingerbread house than a house with lights.  But that’s still okay because gingerbread houses definitely count as Christmas decorations.  If I had been more awake I might have cared to try a bit harder, but I’m happy with how this turned out considering my lack of sleep.
