My Villa | Freehand horse nail art

Hello everyone!

At this point I’m pretty much inactive on this blog, but I felt the need to dust it off for at least this one post.

This one is a little emotional for me because my horse of 16 years died earlier this week, at the age of 41.  She was absolutely ancient for a horse and I’ve been expecting this for years now, but I was devastated when I got the news from home.  I spent an hour straight just crying and not being able to focus on anything, and then I was hit with the desire to do some nail art.

So here is my freehand attempt at my Seville (‘Villa’).  The neon green background on the horse nail is Mod Lacquer Stunned and the others are Stunned with a few layers of Smitten Polish Terra Opal on top.  I chose neon green because of that bridle she’s wearing in the picture above.  It was basically the only bridle that was ever used on her back when she was still able to be ridden.  It’s obviously not color accurate in the pictures, but in real life the greens match really well.

And one more close up matte!  In case you can’t tell with the above pictures, there are three each with a shiny top coat and a matte.

a-england Whispering Waves and Spirit of the Moors + nail art

I’m moving ever so slowly through a chunk of my untrieds, and today’s post features two of my growing collection of a-england polishes.  This time around, I chose Whispering Waves and Spirit of the Moors.

First up is Whispering Waves, a dark turquoise holo with a lavender shimmer.  This one was good in 2 coats, but it unfortunately stained my nails.  That doesn’t change the fact that it’s a very pretty polish.

The second one I tried is Spirit of the Moors, and is definitely my favorite of the two.  This one is a royal blue holo, also good in 2 coats, which was far brighter than I expected.  That’s a good thing, by the way.  It is honestly a gorgeous polish.  And after my experience with Whispering Waves, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this one actually did not stain my nails.

And since I loved Spirit of the Moors so much, I decided to use the two for nail art, with added help from Sinful Colors Green Ocean.  I ended up doing the design on both my hands and actually wore it for like four days.

Seriously, Green Ocean was much shinier than I thought it would be, and I loved it with these two a-england polishes.

Dragon Ball Z nails!

I don’t know how time keeps slipping by so fast, but it’s already been about a month since my last post!  So much for keeping up with my posts, huh?  But I am yet again trying to get back into the swing of things by going back to my nerdy nail art roots.  This time, I’ve got Dragon Ball Z nails!

Yes, I watched anime as a kid/teen.  And yes, I still do fairly often.  Dragon Ball Z was my introduction into anime, and I fell in love with it the moment I first stumbled upon the Namek saga on Toonami as a kid.  And even now as an adult, Gohan holds the position of my favorite character (followed by Piccolo in a VERY close second).

So when my sleep-deprived mind decided to do DBZ nails at 3am, Gohan was my first thought.  Only…I was sleep deprived.  So I didn’t put as much effort into things as I probably should have.

I honestly don’t know what I was thinking trying this.  I’ve never been able to draw anime characters, so I don’t know why I thought painting a tiny Gohan on my fingernail was a good idea.  Although I do have to say, he might have actually looked like Super Saiyan 2 Gohan if I had given him a bigger forehead.  I also sort of lost patience painting the stars on the dragon balls too, but you get the picture. 😛

For all my complaints though, I do like how this turned out.  It’s been a while since I freehanded something detailed, and I hope I do it again soon.  Maybe I need a good challenge to motivate me…

OMD3 Day 15-Cat

So…OMD3’s Day 15 prompt is ‘Cat’.  Yeah, I wasn’t excited about this one.  I don’t like cats.  I don’t hate them or anything, but I’m definitely a dog person.  So I really struggled to find something that I actually wanted to do for this one.  My favorite idea was the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro, but it would have been really hard.  Instead I did Luna from Sailor Moon!

And just like with yesterday’s fish theme, I picked a base polish that fits the prompt too.  For today, it was LynBDesigns Dinah, inspired by Dinah from Alice in Wonderland.  This polish is much more blue than I was expecting from the swatches I looked at, but I love it nonetheless.  And it worked as a nice background for Luna.

She turned out to be more difficult to paint than I thought she would be, but I got her done.  Despite the somewhat messy details, she looks like she’s supposed to and I’m happy about that!

OMD3 Day 13-Book

I’m a day late on this one!  I was in York all day yesterday and passed out as soon as I got home.  But I decided to play catch-up before moving on to the next prompt.

Charlotte’s Web is a book I never read as a kid, and still haven’t as an adult.  So at first it sort of confused me when it was the first book that came to mind when I saw the prompt.  Then I realized when I reached into my fridge for a beer that it popped into my head because Wilbur’s Boozy Breakfast has been on the brain a lot recently.  Wilbur’s Boozy Breakfast just so happens to be a maple bacon bourbon beer that my friends and I brewed, and I just finished up the label design last week.  So yeah, that’s the reasoning behind my book choice!

For all the trouble that this gave me, it turned out nicely.  Wilbur doesn’t look exactly like the pig from the cartoon movie, but that’s okay because this nail art is supposed to be based on the book anyway. Plus I think he still looks good!

Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy…

So if you didn’t get it from the title, I’ve got a mani inspired by Mjolnir today!  For those of you who don’t care for comic books or superhero movies, Mjolnir is Thor’s hammer, which can only be wielded by those deemed worthy.  I saw the new Avengers movie a little over a week ago, and I have to admit I liked the attention paid to Mjolnir and the concept of being ‘worthy’.  It wasn’t my favorite aspect of the movie (that role goes to the general sassiness of all of the characters, especially Hawkeye and Ultron), but it did stand out when I sat down and thought about doing Avengers nail art.

I thought a-England Perceval looked like the color of Thor’s cape, so I used that as a base color.  But then I decided that Mjolnir might not look good with that as a background, so I sponged on Essie Blanc and Kleancolor Concrete Gray for the accent nail, and did a bolt of lightning with Blanc too.  Mjolnir itself was made with Concrete Gray, OPI I Don’t Give a Rotterdam, Zoya Carey, and OPI A-Piers To Be Tan.

I was worried that this wouldn’t turn out well, but I was actually really happy with the end result.  I wish I had sponged the gray and white on the other nails instead of leaving Perceval, but it really doesn’t bother me because 1) I like Perceval, and 2) I like Mjolnir so much that I could have a neon yellow on my other nails and still be pleased with this mani.

And, as per my normal habit, here are a few pictures of Perceval without the nail art.  It was really streaky on the first coat and was still a little bit on the second but I thought it looked okay, which is saying something because I hate streaks.  It’s why I generally avoid metallic and foil polishes.  But Perceval was such a pretty red that I just couldn’t be bothered by them.  It’s not an especially unique red, but it is a really well done one.  So if you’re a fan of reds I would recommend it.

By the way…my nerdy month sort of fell through, didn’t it?  I’ve been busy, and before I knew it, it had been two weeks since my last post.  I’m going to try and pick up my posts for the remainder of the month though, and may even carry the nerdiness over into June.  I will be doing a few more nerdy posts, and hope to be able to turn my CYNA posts into nerdy ones this month too, so we’ll see how that goes.

Darling Diva + nail art!

Well, if you clicked on that rather boring post title, you’re in luck because this one is a good one.  Normally I would put the name of the polish I’m swatching in the title of the post, but this Darling Diva polish has such a long name I decided against it.  Plus some people might find it offensive (maybe?).  It’s called She Had a Big Ass Then, She Has a Big Ass Now.  I think it is, anyway.  The Darling Diva website lists it as Fat Ass instead of Big Ass, so I’m just going by what my bottle says. 😛

I got this for Christmas (because my mom is awesome and is occasionally an enabler) but am just now getting around to trying it out.  And like I said before, it’s a good one.  It’s a coral linear holo which supposedly has gold microglitters in it (I didn’t particularly notice them), and it was good to go in two coats.  This is one of the most intense holos I’ve tried out in a while.  And considering I mostly wear holos…well, that’s a pretty bold statement to make.  Although that intensity doesn’t quite show in these photos.  Go figure.

(And flash)

And because I can’t leave well enough alone, I did some simple nail art using OPI Sorry I’m Fizzy Today and Suzi Has a Swede Tooth.

Darling-Diva-coral-tape-mani-4I know I have a habit of saying this about every polish I try out, but I truly do love this polish.  Coral (in its many variations) is one of my favorite colors, and for this polish to be a holo too just makes it jump pretty high up on my list of favorite polishes.  If you like coral, I would definitely recommend finding this one.
