Winter nail art roundup

Happy belated New Years, everyone!

I clearly never finished posting the nail art I did for the 12 Days of Christmas challenge. So despite the fact that we’re nearly a week into the new year, I thought I would post some of those challenge manis and the one I wore for Christmas lunch at my grandparents’ house.

My ‘Christmas lights’ and ‘Glitter’ nails are pretty self-explanatory, I think.  The indie star of the Christmas lights nails is Nvr Enuff Festivus, and the glitter nails feature ALIQUID Lacquer House of Troubles and Smitten Polish The First Lobster.

My ‘Snowmen’ nails might need a little more explanation.  For anyone who has never seen the claymation Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer movie–or who just plain can’t tell who this is–I chose to paint the narrator snowman of the film, Sam.  I wanted to paint his banjo and umbrella too, but I just didn’t have time.  So instead I used Butter London British Racing Green as my background color to pay homage to his signature waistcoat.

For the ‘Trees’ prompt I chose to do a skitlette mani, using SquareHue Olympiad, Nvr Enuff Festivus, Colors by Llarowe Love, Actually, and a few mainstreams.  My stamping on the ring finger wasn’t great but I really liked how this mani turned out, especially my two ornament nails.

Finally, the nails I wore to Christmas lunch.  I did another tape Christmas tree, but chose to go the blue-and-silver direction instead of the red-and-green.  So I used LynBDesigns Noel and Pahlish My Sister’s Shoes to make the tree and some dots (to act as abstract representations of snowflakes, of course 😛 ).  I cannot even begin to describe how sparkly Noel was.  It was absolutely gorgeous, and I was disappointed to see that my camera captured virtually none of it.

And that’s my roundup of Christmas/winter nails!  There were some I loved and some I really didn’t like–my ‘Stars’ nails were such a failure that I deleted all photos of them–and I really wish that I could have had the time and motivation to complete this challenge.  I kind of miss the week-long max of the old CYNA format.  Hopefully we’ll get some shorter challenges in 2017 that I can actually finish! 😛

Random swatches – 365 Days of Color, Parrot Polish, and Pahlish

**Beware, this is a long one!**

Well, my plans to get back on the nail art train came crashing down around me a few weeks ago, courtesy of a potato peeler.  Yes, I lost a nail to a potato peeler.  I’m really sad about it, because any pictures I took while it was growing back would be tainted by a single nub.  I’m not against nubs at all, but I can never bring myself to completely chop off all my other nails, so it was only one nub and that just looks weird.  So instead of detailed nail art, I just decided to move forward with my plans to shorten my untried list.  Since the list is so extensive, I decided to go in alphabetical order for the most part, trying out 1-3 bottles per brand before moving on to the next.

The first brand in alphabetical order is 365 Days of Color.  This brand no longer makes polish and hasn’t for a while, but she does make body products—oils, lotions, etc.—under the name Sunny’s Body Products.  I got my very first cuticle oils years ago, and the scents I got were amazing.  The range of available scents is really great, so if you want to try out something unique I would encourage you to check out her store.

I’ve tried most of the polishes I got from 365DoC and all that were left on my list were The Diary, The Snake, and The Ring, from a Horcrux collection obviously inspired by Harry Potter.

First up is The Diary.  It’s a sheer grey base with a mix of silver holo and black glitters.  It was apparent after one coat that I would never be able to build it up on its own, so I layered it over Sally Hansen White On.  This is three coats.

Next is The Snake, a bright green jelly with a gold shimmer.  I think this was probably one of the most annoying out of the entire collection because it actually is really pretty, but not as much as it is in the bottle.  The shimmer looked much stronger in the bottle than on the nail.  Also, you can sort of see some spots of darker green in the photos, where there were like clumps of pigment or something.  It was kind of weird, but mostly went away (or was smeared out) with multiple coats.

The last 365DoC polish I had to try was The Ring, which I surprisingly really liked.  It was a gold shimmer topper, and I layered two coats over The Snake.

Then to fulfill my own curiosity I also used one coat over Sally Hansen Black Out.  As much as I liked it over The Snake, I think I liked it better over black.

And bonus polishes!  While I had the nub I went out of alphabetical order for my untried just because I really wanted to finally try one of my many thermals.  So here’s the absolutely gorgeous Parrot Polish Atlantic, which changes from a holo dark green (almost teal) to a limey green.  It was a one coat wonder for me!

(And flash!)

The color isn’t completely accurate in these photos, but it’s pretty close.  The colors weren’t quite what I expected from swatches on the store’s site, but I don’t even care because I like what they looked like in real life so much!  Definitely recommend this one, and I can’t wait to try some of my others.

The second polish I went out of order for was Pahlish Quite Ribbiting, which I got in a blog sale last year.  It’s a dark teal holo, and I fell in love with it long before I put it on my nails.  It even caught my mom’s eye, which is quite a feat because she tends to look at most of my polish with something akin to disdain. 😛

As expected, it was stunning!  But when have I ever said that I didn’t like a teal holo?

And that’s five polishes down, hundreds to go!

Nail mail!!

I got nail mail today!  I was extremely excited about opening this package too.  Not just because it was the cutest packaging I’ve ever gotten polish in, but because I got a couple of new-to-me brands!

Left to right, I’ve got the Dollish Polish/Jindie Nails Bonnie and Clyde duo, Pahlish Grave Robber, Indigo Bananas Alcatraz, Too Fancy Lacquer Lake Como and Velvet Nights, ILNP Fleet Week, Smitten Polish Bifrost and I Never Drink…Wine, Philly Loves Lacquer Oh, the Places You’ll Go, and LynBDesigns Little Foot.

These are my first polishes from Jindie Nails, Indigo Bananas, Too Fancy Lacquer, ILNP, and Philly Loves Lacquer.  And I’m really excited about Little Foot.  LynBDesigns was my first indie brand and Little Foot was the first polish I put on a wish list, but by the time I actually went to place my very first order, it was gone.  So I’m glad to finally have it.

This was truly an amazing haul.  But it’s not my only recent purchase.  I also got some nail mail last month that I thought I’d share too.  I placed an order with Rainbow Connection and picked up some very pretty polishes, and one new-to-me brand.

I’ve already posted swatches of Glam Polish Zap! and Colors by Llarowe Gemini Rising, but I also bought Dollish Polish Serendipity, F.U.N. Lacquer Secret, and Smitten Polish Whiskey in the Jar.  I was apparently feeling the color green when I was placing that order.

I’m really looking forward to using all of these polishes.  Not sure when I’ll get around to it though.  The rest of June is pretty busy, and the Oh Mon Dieu challenge is making a comeback in July.  I’ll be insanely busy, but I’m gonna try to do it in place of the 31 Day Challenge this year. 🙂

Pahlish Mad Man With A Box + Howl’s Moving Castle nail art

Good evening everybody!  I have had a pretty great day today– I got to play with dogs for the first time in months, had lots of sushi for lunch, and made pecan muffins for dinner.  I’m feeling pretty good about this post too!

I decided to try out my first Pahlish a few days ago, and so slapped on a couple of coats of Mad Man With A Box.  It’s a fantastically complex dark blue polish.  From what I can tell, it’s got purple leanings at times, but predominantly has a blue-green shimmer (courtesy of the blue glass flecks) and gold microflakes.  Lots going on, which made it difficult to capture everything in the photos.

(I don’t normally do this, but here’s a close up too, so you can sort of see the glass flecks and gold flakes better.)

Now, it’s rare for a polish to inspire nail art.  Normally when I feel like doing nail art, I have an idea from the beginning of what base color I want to use.  This polish, though, looked very much like starry skies to me, and for some reason my mind jumped to the falling stars in Howl’s Moving Castle.  A pretty big stretch to go from a Doctor Who polish to a Miyazaki movie, but that’s how my mind works I guess.

The falling stars, of course, led me to Calcifer.  And so this mani is all about Cal!  So I’ve got Calcifer when he’s a falling star, when Howl catches him, when he’s in his normal fire form, and when he becomes a star again at the end of the movie.  Lots of polishes here to create such a simple character…Kleancolor Pastel Yellow, Pastel Orange, Pastel Blue, Tangerine Burst, and Black, Essie Avenue Maintain, FingerPaints Paper Mache, Colour Carnival by 17 Bright Orange, Maybelline Color Show Electric Yellow, and Barry M Lychee.

I was a little disappointed that I messed up that iconic little flame by putting his eyes way too close together, but I like the overall mani.  I was absolutely thrilled with how the middle finger turned out since I had to paint Howl’s hands, but then that got messed up a little because my go-to top coat decided to go crazy.  It contributed to Calcifer’s wonky eye too.  I’ve never really had any serious problem with smearing from Seche Vite, but it happened on two of four nails here, and I was not a happy camper.  I didn’t let it put a damper on my mood though!  I was still incredibly happy with this nail art.

Nail mail!!

I posted my CYNA Day 8 mani very early on the 15th because I thought I’d be travelling on that day, but it turns out that I had the day of my flight wrong, and so I didn’t get back home to the US until last night instead.  I had been awake for somewhere in the neighborhood of 36 hours and really should have just immediately crashed, but when I walked into my bedroom I saw this:

Aside from the big Amazon box in the back, all of those packages were full of nail polish.  And I knew that.  I got very excited.  Instead of going to sleep, I spent an hour unpacking everything and admiring all of my purchases.  So many pretties!  I don’t know how to choose which one to use first.

I’ve got representatives from Pahlish, Colors by Llarowe, ALIQUID Lacquer, NerdLacquer, Gothic Gala Lacquers, Sweet Heart Polish, Paint Box Polish, SquareHue, and LynBDesigns and ended up with 62 bottles of polish (plus a cuticle oil).  And out of all of those polishes I only had one casualty!  It was Why Meddle? by LynBDesigns.  It tried to take down a few others with it, but they only obtained mild injuries.  So really, I have 61 bottles instead of 62.

So…any advice on how to choose which one to use first?

EDIT 12/18/14:

As per Millie’s request in the comments, here’s a complete list of everything in the picture.

Pahlish Mad Man With a Box

SquareHue Cañon Drive ; Wilshire Boulevard ; Na Prikope ; Vaclavske Namesti ; Sampokeskus : Parizska ; Revontuli ; Joulupukin Pajakyla ; Rodeo Drive

LynBDesigns Absolutely Absolem ; Okay? Okay ; Whimsically Inventive ; Ragdoll ; Fishing With No Bait ; All Holo’s Eve ; I’m Not Myself, You See ; Meretricious ; Double Bluff ; Defender of the Downtrodden ; Black Friday Blues ; Phenomenal Cosmic Powers ; Wild and Sweet ; Nightmare Revisited ; Seize the Day, Boys ; I Heard the Bells ; This Is Halloween ; M’Lady’s Prerogative ; Fun With Flags ; From Night to Day ; Old Familiar Carols ; Dinah ; Unbroken Song ; England Would Fall ; I Am Beyond Impropriety ; However, Whatever, Whenever ; The Credible Hulk ; Tasting the Stars; (plus the cuticle oil B-Moisturized in Peach, and the broken Why Meddle?)

And that’s everything!  A few of those were LE that I got with Black Friday orders, and I honestly was surprised by two of them.  I’m not sure if I knew I’d be getting a LE from Sweet Heart and then forgot about it, but seeing five polishes when I opened that package confused me before I saw the name ‘Turkey Day 2014’.  And I knew I’d be getting two extra LynB polishes (Wild and Sweet ; I Heard the Bells), but that third (Black Friday Blues)…well, I somehow crossed the $75 mark without realizing it.  That’s right, I honestly did not know that I spent over $75 because I stopped paying attention after I reached the $50 mark.  How careless is that?!  Still, it all turned out for the best, I guess.  I can add another LE to my collection thanks to that carelessness. 😛
