Today brings the second prompt for the 12 Days of Christmas challenge, which is ‘snowflakes’. This is another where I couldn’t even hope to top a past design—my Doctor Who snowflake nails are still kind of awesome in my opinion—so I stuck to stamping for this one. I did decide to challenge myself a bit more by doing a pond mani though. I unfortunately didn’t have a plain blue jelly that was a light enough color to use, so I had to improvise.
I ended up using Pretty Jelly Curiouser and Curiouser, Sassy Pants Polish Saber the Moment, and a white stamping polish for the snowflakes accent nail and used Saber the Moment and the white for the pond technique on the other snow nails.
It actually turned out pretty well. I like it. I was worried that the shimmer of Saber the Moment wouldn’t really work well for a pond mani but it actually made it look more shiny like snow, as I had hoped. The pictures don’t look quite as nice as it did in person, but you can still see the layers pretty easily.
Hi everybody! Despite my best intentions, it has been a pretty good while since I last posted anything. I’ve been very busy preparing for a review panel and marking papers, so busy that I missed the first few days of this year’s Challenge Your Nail Art 12 Days of Christmas. It was really fun last year and I’m sort of sad that I’m late posting for the first few days. Oh well, story of my life. I’m going to play catch-up though, and hopefully keep on top of the rest of the prompts!
Anyway, the prompt for Day 1 was Snow Day, so I combined a little snowball fight and snowman scene with some stamped snowflakes. That pretty holo blue in the background is ILNP Peri Me, and it looks especially great with those snowflakes.
I actually really like how this turned out. Not a bad start to this year’s challenge, even if I am three days late!
I cannot believe that I’m actually making a post right now, since I’m currently dying from eating too much food today and just want to flake out and watch Big Bang Theory on the 65″ Smart TV my sister and I bought our mom for Christmas. But I’m powering through the pain to deliver my last holiday nail art of 2014!
The nail art I did today was not, in fact, a recreation of the wreath/holly/mistletoe nail art that I did a few days ago (as I said it would be), but was instead more winter-themed than Christmas. I started with a silver and blue gradient with LynBDesigns I Heard the Bells and All Holo’s Eve. Even though I Heard the Bells is technically described as a holo topper, I was able to build it up pretty well. Here it is with 4 coats.
And just for kicks, here’s the gradient on its own, first without flash and then with (for the last three photos).
Now for the nail art itself. Since the gradient looked like a snowy sky, I painted some little snow-covered trees with 17 Mini Skirt. Then to make an accent nail, I added a snowman to my index finger with Mini Skirt, Pure Ice Black Out, and Sinful Colors Cloud 9. Again, first picture is without flash, the other three are with.
To be honest, I wish I had left the snowman out. My sister liked it, but I thought it didn’t fit with the trees very well. Still, I kind of liked this mani. It was a nice end to holiday nails for the season.
I’ll be heading to my grandparents’ cabin in Georgia in two days, so I probably won’t be able to make any posts until I get back on the 2nd, since they don’t have internet up there. So if I don’t post anything tomorrow or on the 27th (my birthday!), I’ll see you when I see you!
Day 5 of the Challenge Your Nail Art 12 Days of Christmas nail art challenge! I said on Day 4 that I was going to let myself have another go at Rise of the Guardians for this prompt, and I followed through on that. The thing is, I didn’t go into this nail art with as much enthusiasm today and so skimped on details when there kind of should have been details. I’m not saying today’s mani is bad, I’m just saying that I personally don’t like it as much as my elves.
Anyway, here are the colors used: Kleancolor Pastel Blue, Model’s Own Blueberry Muffin, FingerPaints Paper Mache, Kleancolor Concrete Gray, Essie Luxeffects Pure Pearlfection, Essie Avenue Maintain, OPI OPI…Eurso Euro, OPI A-Piers to Be Tan, Barry M Lychee, Essie Limo-scene, No7 Beanie
Okay, so a little explanation about what I was going for here…for anyone who has seen the movie, I hope it at least comes across that these were inspired by Jack Frost. The index didn’t show up well in the photos, but it’s supposed to be Jack’s staff creating ice on a pond. The middle finger shows Jack with his staff and the ring finger was my first attempt at creating a snow flurry. That monstrosity on my pinky is supposed to be that ice/black sand sculpture that Jack and Pitch create while fighting in the arctic(?).
So…it’s pretty clear by now that I am not happy with this mani. The pinky is the worst, but nothing else really turned out right either. And I know I’m being hard on myself here, but it is my personal opinion that this one just doesn’t look good enough to wear in public, so I’m counting it as a failure. It was a nice try though. Still got in done in time for Day 5, which is all that counts! And I will admit that Jack doesn’t look so bad if you ignore his slightly round head.
Of course, this is in no way discouraging me from trying out unique or difficult designs. Actually…Is it weird that I’m excited that this is my first ‘failed’ mani for this challenge? It’s been a while since I did nail art that I outright disliked, so it’s about time it happened again! But, uh, crossing my fingers that tomorrow’s turns out a little better. 😛
Well, since things with the Challenge Your Nail Art group are a little different this month, the next challenge is already upon us! Instead of a handful of daily prompts at the end of the month, we’re doing 12 days of Christmas/winter themed prompts every other day from today until the 23rd.
As you can see, today’s prompt is snowflakes. Is it weird that the first thing that came to mind was Doctor Who? Maybe not, if you consider the fact that I saw these photos on my phone the other day. I had almost forgotten that I made these for my sister last year!
There were a couple more, but I think you get the point. I wanted to do Doctor Who snowflakes on my nails. Nothing less would do for this prompt.
So, using ellagee Trenzalore as a background color, I painted fragments of some of these designs using FingerPaints Paper Mache. Then because I didn’t want to do Adipose and failed spectacularly at both Cybermen and sonic screwdrivers, I used the same colors, plus Sally Hansen Black Out and OPI OPI…Eurso Euro to make a little scene with a snowy TARDIS.
Not quite what I originally intended, but I really don’t care because these are kind of awesome! I’m glad I decided for a return to nerdiness for the start of this challenge. It’s been too long, and these turned out pretty dang well. I can’t even figure out which of the three snowflakes is my favorite, I’m so happy with how they all turned out!
Definitely worth all the trouble. I think I might do a nerdy spin on a few more of the prompts now. Maybe not tomorrow’s, but anyone who knows Doctor Who probably knows what I’m thinking for Day 3. 🙂
