OMD3 Day 25-Weather

I obviously was not able to finish the OMD3 challenge in July, but I’m still going to get as many up by the deadline on the 5th as I can.  There’s a good chance I won’t get all of the remaining prompts done, but I’m going to try my best.

Anyway…I’m from Florida, so summers for me are typically full of thunderstorms.  But as much as it rains here in England, it doesn’t actually storm very often.  In fact, I’ve lived in England for nearly two (non-consecutive) years now, and I only heard thunder for the first time at the beginning of July.  I got so excited, I was legitimately freaking out (in a good way).  I threw my curtains open and turned my lights off and just sat there staring at the rain and grinning every time lightning forked across the sky.  Fun fact: This was actually the first time one of my British friends had ever seen forked lightning.

Anyway, lightning nails were sort of the obvious choice for my weather nails.

I like them.  They’re nothing fancy, but they still look good.  They’re definitely better than my last two attempts at lightning too, which were for my Mjolnir nail art and for the OMD2 challenge Outdoors prompt last year.  Neither of those were very good.

OMD3 Day 3-Silver

Ugh, silver.  I don’t generally like silver polishes–at least on me–unless I’m really in the mood for them.  So I was a little disappointed to see that this prompt appeared on the OMD3 list, especially so early in the challenge.  And since I’m still a little scarred by my clean-up experience on Day 1, glitter was out for today.  This left me with maybe 5 polishes to choose from.  I picked a-england Excalibur, simply because I hadn’t yet tried it and because the name itself gave me something to work with in terms of nail art.

So, Excalibur nail art.  Sword in the stone.  Almost did a Lady of the Lake nail too, but decided not to bother.

Not too shabby, right?  I’m actually really okay with this, considering I had some color issues while painting.  I’m more happy about the stone turning out well than anything else.  But I have to say Excalibur was not the polish to choose if I wanted an easy clean-up.  It got everywhere.  It was worth it though, because it is a pretty nice silver polish.  I think it’s the flecks of gold that give it a little extra oomph.

CYNA Candy challenge, Day 4-3D candy nails

Good evening everyone!  I’m a day late with this one, but I was unfortunately a bit too busy yesterday to do the 3D candy nails I wanted to do (Candy Crush nails made with rhinestones).  Instead, I took a page out of Monica Sengupta’s book and tried sugar spun nails.  She does them really well, and has done them twice for this challenge (here and here).  I love hers, but trying to do them myself was a huge pain in the butt!

But, I tried anyway.  I wanted mine to look like a variety of chocolate truffles, so I used Zoya Louise, OPI Ice-bergers and Fries, FingerPaints Paper Mache, and Essie Limo-scene as my polishes.

They don’t look as good as Monica’s, but they’re not bad at all for a first attempt.  Of course, they would have looked better if I hadn’t smashed two of them right before I took the photos. 😛  You can also tell where I got a bit frustrated at times and actually touched the dotting tool I was using onto the nail.  I kind of like the clumpy parts though, since you see that on drizzled chocolate truffles a lot.  All in all, I do like this mani.

I’m going to have to try my hand at this again some time though, because it is a really cool effect even if this attempt was a bit annoying.

Hey! Listen! *Legend of Zelda nail art!*

Yeah, not even bothering to make excuses this time.  I’m tired and just plain haven’t wanted to do my nails.  I was really excited for this month’s CYNA theme too (Space!), but when it came time to sit down and do the nail art…I just didn’t feel like it.  So I skipped this month’s challenge, and made myself feel better about it by doing Legend of Zelda nails instead.

These were a complete fluke, by the way.  I had finally broken down and worn my new Colors by Llarowe Gemini Rising–which I got in a recent order from Rainbow Connection–and was perfectly content to wear it on its own.  But as I was admiring my left hand, my eyes strayed from the perfect Kokiri tunic green down to the triforce tattoo on my wrist.  I kid you not, I heard Navi yell ‘Hey!’ in my head.  I don’t know if that was inspiration knocking, or just insanity.

So, I broke out a whole bunch of polishes and got to work.  I used Essie Bikini So Teeny, SquareHue Wilshire Boulevard, and Zoya Carey to make the Ocarina of Time. Carey, OPI OPI…Eurso Euro, Kleancolor Red, Maybelline Color Show Electric Yellow, and OPI Do You Have This Color in Stock-holm? for the Hylian Shield and Master Sword, and Electric Yellow again for the triforce.  Navi was made with Kleancolor Pastel Blue and Essie Blanc.

I am so happy with how these turned out.  I’ve really liked the past few manis that I’ve done, but this one truly blows them out of the water, in my opinion.  The pictures just don’t quite do it justice since they’re sort of blurry.  My triforce is almost perfect–quite a feat since I can never draw that thing right–and my shield has so much more detail than I thought I would be able to squeeze onto such a small canvas.  I’m even happy with Navi, although I can assure you I was never happy with her in the game itself. 😛

And, of course, here’s Gemini Rising on its own:

This is a magnificent linear holo that for me falls somewhere between emerald and kelly green.  The green is so vivid, I was mesmerized.  It went on in 2 coats too, which is always nice.  But major downside, Gemini Rising is a horrific stainer.  Greens scare me because they have stained my nails in the past, so I made sure to put on two coats of my base coat.  Uh, yeah, didn’t work, obviously.

That’s gonna take some time to get rid of.  Will that stop me from wearing this polish again?  Well, I really don’t think I need to answer that question.

Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy…

So if you didn’t get it from the title, I’ve got a mani inspired by Mjolnir today!  For those of you who don’t care for comic books or superhero movies, Mjolnir is Thor’s hammer, which can only be wielded by those deemed worthy.  I saw the new Avengers movie a little over a week ago, and I have to admit I liked the attention paid to Mjolnir and the concept of being ‘worthy’.  It wasn’t my favorite aspect of the movie (that role goes to the general sassiness of all of the characters, especially Hawkeye and Ultron), but it did stand out when I sat down and thought about doing Avengers nail art.

I thought a-England Perceval looked like the color of Thor’s cape, so I used that as a base color.  But then I decided that Mjolnir might not look good with that as a background, so I sponged on Essie Blanc and Kleancolor Concrete Gray for the accent nail, and did a bolt of lightning with Blanc too.  Mjolnir itself was made with Concrete Gray, OPI I Don’t Give a Rotterdam, Zoya Carey, and OPI A-Piers To Be Tan.

I was worried that this wouldn’t turn out well, but I was actually really happy with the end result.  I wish I had sponged the gray and white on the other nails instead of leaving Perceval, but it really doesn’t bother me because 1) I like Perceval, and 2) I like Mjolnir so much that I could have a neon yellow on my other nails and still be pleased with this mani.

And, as per my normal habit, here are a few pictures of Perceval without the nail art.  It was really streaky on the first coat and was still a little bit on the second but I thought it looked okay, which is saying something because I hate streaks.  It’s why I generally avoid metallic and foil polishes.  But Perceval was such a pretty red that I just couldn’t be bothered by them.  It’s not an especially unique red, but it is a really well done one.  So if you’re a fan of reds I would recommend it.

By the way…my nerdy month sort of fell through, didn’t it?  I’ve been busy, and before I knew it, it had been two weeks since my last post.  I’m going to try and pick up my posts for the remainder of the month though, and may even carry the nerdiness over into June.  I will be doing a few more nerdy posts, and hope to be able to turn my CYNA posts into nerdy ones this month too, so we’ll see how that goes.

May the 4th be with you!

Time to kick off a month of nerdy nail art with a dose of Star Wars goodness!  I’ve done manis for May 4th for the past two years, and I wanted to avoid repeats if I could.  Plus, I really wasn’t in the mood for anything intricate like my torsos from last year.  So I decided to try my hand at ships rather than characters this time!  Since, ya know, starships aren’t intricate at all…

I started off by making galaxies with Serum No 5 Lightspeed and Burning Orchid, Ulta Fuschiamania, OPI OPI…Eurso Euro, and Kleancolor Silver Glitter.

(Pardon the bad picture, but I couldn’t help wanting to show off the fact that it glows too!)

Honestly, I wasn’t really feeling up to doing my nails today and almost left things here (because I happen to love galaxy nails), but May 4th only comes around once a year and I decided I better damn well suck it up and power though it.

So, I made a star destroyer, the Millenium Falcon, a tie fighter, and an x-wing with Zoya Carey and Kleancolor Black and Concrete Gray.  I also had a little bit of Barry M Paprika to add a little bit of orange design to the x-wing, but that all disappeared when i had a little mishap with a top coat and had to touch things up.

These aren’t perfect, but I do like how they look.  Of course, it was only after I started painting the x-wing that I realized why I liked this ‘ships in space’ idea so much…I had used it before for my 31DC galaxy nails last July.  So much for no repeats.  Still, they turned out nice.  I especially like the tie fighter.  And the glow!  It looks so cool!

So, despite my odd lack of enthusiasm for May 4th this year, I think the month of nerdiness has started off pretty dang well!

A funny thing happened on the way to the forum…

That funny thing was that I dropped off the face of the earth, apparently.  So, yeah, I took a trip to Italy!  I was only gone for a little over a week, but my blog sort of died in the weeks leading up to the trip.  Completely unintentional, but there ya go.  It’s also unfortunate that my nails took a major hit while I was gone.  Seven of them got broken!  Of course, the broken ones on my left hand have fortunately recovered by now.  Lucky they grow quickly!

Anyway, to celebrate the return from my trip I decided to do some Rome-themed nail art.  Well, Rome and Vatican themed.  Many, many polishes went into this frankly simple nail art.  Organized by brand:

OPI – You’re So Vain-illa, Going My Way or Norway?, Ice-bergers & Fries, OPI With a Nice Finn-ish

Kleancolor – Pastel Blue, Concrete Gray

LynBDesigns – Okay? Okay, Defender of the Downtrodden

Essie – Avenue Maintain, Limo-scene

Zoya – Carey

Flower – Go with the Flow-er

And now for the nail art itself!  I have the Pantheon, the Colosseum, and the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica.  Plus an ‘SPQR’ inspired by one of my tattoos, which is fitting because I saw those letters practically every time I looked at the sidewalk in Rome.

Not my best, but I think it turned out pretty good, considering I haven’t freehanded anything in over a month.  Actually, I’m happy with everything except the Colosseum, and that’s largely due to my having chosen an awkward angle to work with.  And also partially due to laziness…those arches are a pain!

And I wish I had better pictures for this, but I thought I’d show off my background polish too.  It’s LynBDesigns Okay? Okay, which is a sky blue holo.  Best part?  Easily a two-coater since it’s a creme.  Possibly one if you’re careful, but I’m not.

Now, these aren’t completely color accurate.  In person, the polish is a bit darker and the holo is very easy to see.  I’m sort of in love with it.  But then again, when do I ever not say that about a LynB polish?
